Cleaning is so “NOT my thing”… you know? I actually despise clutter but with four children (one of which is under the age of 5), a husband with a new electrical business, running our small town café and organizing our school life around activities and curriculum; there is just BOUND to be some clutter in our house. This past year was especially hard on our family because while we were balancing our responsibilities and planning cool extra unit studies (http://hidingthepeas.wordpress.com/2013/08/13/free-for-you-evelyn-cameron-pioneer-photographer-curriculum/) the house began to collect things on it’s own. Seriously! I actually pictured the house out garage sale shopping while we were at our latest field trip.
So, I made a plan. This summer, before school started, I was going to dedicate three weeks in order to clear the house of CLUTTER! Last year, I reorganized our homeschool storage closet which had experienced some sort of book earthquake during the winter vacation. This year, while it is a bit cluttered up, I am skipping the storage closet and instead focusing on the REST OF THE HOUSE.
OIY! Ever feel that you have taken on a bigger task than you could handle? I am almost to the end of week two in our cleaning journey and I can now see the end in the sight! We have given away over 16 bags of “stuff” and I am almost done cleaning out the toys. We had boxes and boxes of hand me downs in a little storage closest under the stairs. After clearing them out, we now have a reading nook and private hideout for the kids. Thank you Kelly Ruddat, one of our Hiding the Peas writers, for placing that idea on my Facebook wall!!
The most exciting part of all is that the clutter is now almost completely under control. What a great way to start our new school year!!! Last week, I also ordered our homeschool curriculum and am greatly anticipating it’s arrival soon. Upcoming blogs will be focused on what we have selected and also share our favorite curriculums throughout the years.
Now, if I can just teach my house to say NO when it comes to garage sale-ing without us…
Do you do any back to school cleaning? I would love to hear your cleaning highs and lows! I need a bit of encouragement to hit that finish line!
